1969 at the Office of the President (OOP) a great idea was born. The employees of the Office of the President (OOP) came together and established a merry-go-round. The objective was to create a vehicle to promote a savings culture among themselves and to lend out short-term loans for personal growth and development.
From this noble idea, Harambee DT SACCO Society Ltd was formed and officially registered as a society in 1970 – Registration No. CS/1916
With the will of the people so strong and the desire for growth so big, it is not surprising that Harambee DT SACCO Society ltd continued growing from strength to strength to become a commercially autonomous, democratically controlled and self-reliant business enterprise serving the needs of over 70,000 kenyans through a network of FOSA branches in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru and Nanyuki.
Today, with over Kshs. 38.69 Billion in assets, Harambee DT SACCO is feted among the largest societies in Kenya and uses its assets to empower members to live with dignity and accomplishment throughout their lives.

Operating from its first office in the Office of the President (OOP), it laid the foundation for a trusted institution that would grow to become a cornerstone of financial empowerment in Kenya.

Following its foundational year, Harambee DT SACCO was formally registered in 1970 under Registration No. CS/1916. This pivotal milestone gave the society legal status and set the stage for structured governance, membership expansion, and financial inclusion, shaping the cooperative into a trusted institution for generations.
Bricks and ambition: The Plaza symbolized not just space, but stability and vision for the growing SACCO community.
In 1979, Harambee DT SACCO broke ground on what would become a landmark in cooperative history — the Harambee Co-operative Plaza. This architectural endeavor represented a growing membership’s need for dedicated infrastructure and was a proud step toward institutional self-sufficiency and service excellence.
From borrowed spaces to a purpose-built hub — a journey defined by persistence, growth, and purpose.
The completion of Harambee Co-operative Plaza in 1986 marked a turning point in the Society’s journey. After operating from the Office of the President (OOP), then Government Printers, and later Shankadas House, the SACCO finally established a dedicated headquarters — a proud testament to member commitment and organizational growth. The Plaza provided ample space to better serve the growing membership and advance the SACCO's long-term mission.
Bringing services closer to members: A bold step toward accessibility and convenience.
In 2001, Harambee DT SACCO achieved another milestone by opening its first Front Office Service Activity (FOSA) office in Nairobi. This initiative marked a significant shift in how members accessed financial services, offering a one-stop solution for deposits, withdrawals, and other essential transactions. The Nairobi FOSA office became a cornerstone of member convenience, setting the stage for further expansion and innovation in service delivery.

In 2014, Harambee DT SACCO launched the Harambee Investment Co-operative Society (HICs), a strategic initiative aimed at providing members with access to lucrative investment opportunities. This milestone marked a significant expansion of the SACCO's mission, enabling members to pool resources and invest in high-value projects, fostering financial growth and long-term prosperity.

In 2017, Harambee DT SACCO embraced a new era of technological advancement by migrating from the Bankers Realm (BR) system to the Navision platform. This strategic upgrade streamlined operations, improved service delivery, and positioned the SACCO for sustained growth in an increasingly digital world.

In 2017, Harambee DT SACCO acquired its first mobile banking platform, enabling members to access financial services conveniently from their mobile devices.
